A Strange Request at a Piano Bar
There was once a piano bar at a strange carnival that used to come through town when the nights grew cold and the stars shined their brightest. It was often overlooked by the general public due the controversy about possible underage juvenile laborers working the night shifts. You had to go off the midway, way back into the carny camps, to find the little shack with it's rusted sign. Years of oxidation had taken its toll on the once gleaming tin surface. I had heard tales of what lay inside and, on one very chilly night, I took it upon myself to enter.
Upon crossing the threshold I was given a mask to wear. The smell of fresh apple pie and sassafras root beer filled the air. The old man at the piano was playing a rather upbeat tune which had the gathering of young men and women on their feet. I approached him and he gave me an awkward smile from behind his mask.
"Do you have a request young man?"
"Yes. A rather strange one. Play something by Beethoven please"
He immediately started playing the Ode to Joy as if he had read my mind and hearts desire. I started to dance and twirl as the music grew and filled the now vacant dance floor. A young lady came forward during my feverish twirling and tripped me! I fell backwards among some stools and sprained my ankle much to my dismay. The masked patrons applauded as I limped out of the bar and into the cold night. I turned around one last time to face the crowd which was cheering my folly. The young woman who tripped me came forward and lifted her mask just enough for me to see her face. My sister stared back at me with a devilish grin.
The End
